Description

M.P. Moller Pipe Organ
Opus 3834, Three Manuals, 22 Ranks
plus Harp and Chimes
New drawknob console in 1976
ca. 5-6" Wind Pressure
This remarkable organ is a true survivor, unaltered from the original tonal specifications since its installation 96 years ago! A new console in 1976 gave it new life, and while the console bears names associated with the Orgelbewegung (or at least the American Classic) era, there have been no tonal alterations back in the chambers. Perhaps some were planned but never executed? The presence of multiple blank drawknobs indicates something may have been in the works.
We have many more photographs of the instrument available for the asking. Please be specific as to what you would like by way of photographs.
In the chambers the only thing that has been altered are the replacement of a few relays, probably in 1976 when the console was replaced. All chests still run on the original Moller "inside" magnets.
PLEASE NOTE:
It will be the responsibility of the purchaser to remove the organ, or arrange for its removal by a qualified professional pipe organ builder. Since the building is now owned by the neighboring hospital, it may be required that proof of adequate insurance against damage to the premises and injury to persons be provided. We are acting only as the broker of the instrument; we will not participate in the removal, transport, storage, rebuilding, or installation of the organ. We can recommend qualified builders if you prefer.
The organ is currently unplayable due to a water leak in the blower room causing the static regulator to fail. There is no evidence of water in either chamber, nor is there evidence of other damage. Apparently there was a burst pipe in the basement, nothing more. If you would like to hear the organ and/or verify wind pressures before the removal, plan on making adequate repairs to the static regulator. The large wood-box Kinetic blower may be best left behind also, as it is going to be a large undertaking to remove it, and better blowers are readily available.
The wind regulators throughout the organ were releathered in recent years and should be serviceable for many years to come. The wind chests were not opened to ascertain the condition of the pouch leather. It is reasonably safe to assume leather work will be necessary.
The organ can remain in-situ for the time being while arrangements are being made for its removal. Getting the Swell/Pedal/Harp chamber vacated and console removed will be relatively easy, as the chamber empties into a wide hallway with a wide stairway leading almost directly outside.
Removing the Great/Choir/Pedal chamber will be quite challenging, as there is a very narrow shaft leading down one level to the same hallway as the Swell/Pedal chamber. Once at this level the removal will be fairly easy.
HOWEVER, and this is a big HOWEVER
, the largest pipes, wind regulators, and main chests will not fit down this hatch. Removal of these portions of the organ must be done through an attic window quite some distance from the ground. Using a forklift would be possible as the ground is paved. Setting up rigging would also be possible.
It is also permissible to leave behind those portions of the Great/Choir/Pedal that are too difficult to remove, though you will undoubtedly want the largest pipework (16' Open Diapason, 16' 2nd Open Diapason, 16' Tuba) so plan accordingly.
If you search the Organ Historical Society Database you will find two entries on this organ, #49957 showing photos of the current status of the organ, and #44674 which shows the original specifications, which follow:
