BROTHERTONS SQUARE WRAPPED FLATTENED WIRE GAUCHO BARBS - ANTIQUE BARBED WIRE

This listing is for an authentic vintage sample of antique barbed wire fencing.   This wire features a Jacob Brotherton patent, dated September 3, 1878.  This wire is called "Brotherton's Two Point Flattened Round Square Wrapped Gaucho Barbs on Two Twisted Line Wires" by collectors.  (ref. Hagemeier 264-B
VARIATION
). (This Hagemeier Number shows a Brotherton Gaucho or long pointed barb.  I could find no listing for the barbs made of flattened round wire;  or for the square wrapped barbs).    This wire features two round line wires twisted together.    Barbs are two pointed made from round barbing stock that has been rolled to create two flat areas.  One point is inserted between the two lines, and barb is wrapped around two and one half times around both the  line wires.   Barbing points are at right angles to the lines at entry, whereas in most Brothertons the barbing wrap lies against itself.   Barbing points are very long ...... termed a  "Gaucho" barb by collectors.  Wire sample is at least 18" in length.    It shows age and use wear with light to moderate pitting.   There are four barbs, well spaced, and cut is well centered.  There is some light bending of barbing points, but no broken or missing points.  Wire is in  good used condition.
