This complete set includes a finely hand embroidered double ear headstall with a fine, hand forged & silver inlaid, engraved & filigreed California style Flower bit, and finely hand made 3 color twist braided reins with fancy teardrop decorations.
Note that Western South of the Border leather items are scarce due to the horrendous tanning process used. Some items would self destruct in weeks or months. High end South of the Border saddle makers used imported English leather for their saddles. Leather headstalls & bridles are the rarest horse trappings to find in fine condition; as the horse sweat would saturate the leather and make it more susceptible to tearing or deteriorating. These were utilitarian items made for use, and were typically handed down from generation to generation. Thus, fine condition South of the Border headstalls are extremely scarce.
This fine, Antique mint condition headstall is an unusual double ear style; almost all headstalls are single ear. This one has 2 layers of leather that are stitched together; the inside liner is of suede leather. All 6 pieces of the suede leather lined headstall are matching, and hand pitiado embroidered; i.e., hand-stitched using Pitiado (cactus fiber) thread in a fancy stylized pattern with pitiado borders. All of the pieces of the headstall match, en suite, in pattern & color; and are supple. The top of the headstall is about 13/16" wide, with a 9/16" wide hand embroidered double ear bands that are secured by 4 matching domed nickel buttons with a mushroom shaped ends going through both thickness of leather, allowing the top straps to swivel. Both sides of the headstall have a 7 1/2" long x 2" wide suede lined pieces that are double stitched, with large nickel adjustment buckles at the top and 1/2" straps with small nickel adjustment buckles at the bottom to attach the bit. The headstall is about 22" from the top to the bottom of the bit loops when hanging, and about 38" from top to bottom of the rein chains as shown when hanging. The headstall is in untouched condition that advanced collectors love; and has never been treated with leather conditioner.
The large, fancy, hand forged and finely silver inlaid, engraved & filigreed California Santa Barbara style bit is complete with rein chains with a mid-swivel. This Large hand forged bit is made in the American style of a California Santa Barbara loose jaw spade bit; but with a California Salinas style mouth piece. The cheek pieces are about 8 1/2" long x 2 1/2" wide, with silver inlaid & engraved, filigreed, with a large center 2" domed silver inlaid & engraved flower concho is riveted with a copper rivet to the bar that remains after the circular cut out of the cheek pieces. The top bit ring is finely silver inlaid and zig zag engraved with small engraved accents, en suite with the concho ring. The top of the cheek pieces are finely silver inlaid & line engraved in a traditional scroll pattern and embellished with a stippled (textured) background; en suite with the bottom half. The silver inlaid & engraved flower concho has 12 petals with very fine line  engraving with a zig zag engraved border with a raised silver dome center. The frame of the concho is finely silver inlaid and zig zag engraved with small engraved accents. The sculptured bottoms of the bit are very finely silver inlaid & line engraved  in a traditional scroll pattern and embellished with a stippled background. There are 2 small silver domed buttons at the bottom of each cheek piece, along with small silver inlaid & engraved panels below the two small silver buttons. The stylized front mouth bar is silver inlaid & line engraved in a scroll pattern, with 3 small silver dome conchos, en suite with the cheek pieces. Both tops & bottoms of the top half and circular concho frame of the cheek pieces have multiple horizontal silver inlaid stripes. The inside measurement of this large bit is about 5 1/8". The loose jaw mouth bar has a California Salinas mouth piece for the port bit and is affixed to the cheek pieces with hand forged bar with square silver end panels with line engraved flower patterns and a zig zag border. The Salinas style mouth piece has a large copper grooved barrel cricket to help keep the horse's mouth moist, as does the copper inlaid cover of the top of the mouth piece.
The closed end double candy striped twist braided reins are made from cotton cords. The black striped cord is twist braided into the white cord, which is then twist braided into the tan cord that creates the double candy striped pattern. The rein chain holders are made in the old style with smaller double candy striped strands ending in a Turks head knot that fits through a small loop to secure the ends of the rein chains. There are 7 braided knot decorations and 2 large teardrop decorations made from 3 colors of string.
This is a fine quality matching Headstall, hand forged, hand silver inlaid, engraved & filigreed silver flower California Santa Barbara style bit with no missing silver inlays; all with a nice naturally occurring aged patina to the silver inlays. Collectors love this fine patina; and Matching examples like this set are extremely hard to find. As is typical, none of the pieces from South of the Border, down Mexico way, are Maker marked. This is perfect as a wall hanger, or as a Western, Western Americana, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Bit, Bridle, Headstall, Old West, Horse man, Horse woman, Horse Trapping, Charro, Charrita, Folk art or Equestrian display. This set could still be used, or kept as a fine Antique & conversation piece. It is extremely difficult to find a complete, fancy, Matching antique fancy headstall, silver inlaid, engraved & filigreed bit and rein set; all in fine, original condition, and a great investment. Circa late Charro period, around 1930's - 40's.
